30 DIY Gifts You Can Make by Christmas

Here we are at the beginning of November and the time has come.  What time??  The time to figure out what DIY gifts you’re making for your family and friends this Christmas!  Fortunately, I’ve got you covered!  Obviously, if you’re just now starting, you probably won’t be crocheting an afghan or anything like that.  But luckily, there are still lots of DIY gifts you can get made by December 25th!  Many of these will only take a couple of hours to complete.  Here are my favorites, categorized by who they’d be best for.

*Since this was posted seven years ago, I’ve had thousands of visitors to my site. Unfortunately, since then, many of the blogs I’d linked to have been taken down. So…for 2021, I’m working on a new version with 30 totally new DIY gifts you can make in time for Christmas! Link coming soon!*

This list has lots of great ideas for DIY gifts. They're simple enough to complete in an hour or two and not break the bank!

DIY Gifts for Kids:

You could make an adorable, yet simple Hobby Horse that will make any child smile.

What child wouldn’t LOVE to have an A-frame Tent??  I know mine would!

My girls have a crayon holder and love it!  It’s great for the car or church or restaurants or…anywhere!  Make this Felt Crayon Holder for your little one this Christmas for a useful and super cute gift!

Oh. My.  This Hopscotch Mat might just be the best idea I’ve ever seen!  Check out the other games on the back as well!

DIY Gifts for Moms:

Moms love a good bubble bath, but since there isn’t always time for that, this Candy Cane Sugar Scrub can nicely fill the void!

Okay, so these sweater treat bags aren’t gifts in and of themselves, but if you make up the bags and fill them with treats your mom loves, they’re so pretty, she’ll surely have a smile on her face!

Before I became a mom, I had houseplants that lived.  Now, I have houseplants that mostly don’t do so hot.  So for a busy mom like me, this tiny terrarium would be a great gift!  (I have bought these air plants and they’re great!  Haven’t killed them yet!)

These Water Balloon Luminaries are just SO pretty!  They’re a little more complicated than some of the other projects listed here, but the WOW factor is worth it!  (These giant water balloons should work great!)

This DIY Birds Egg Necklace is a great gift for any woman and you can use birthstones to easily make it a “mother’s necklace”.  I made a couple of these a few years back and they were so simple, yet so lovely!

Moms love jewelry and these bead necklaces are unique and really beautiful!

If you’re looking for something more useful to give your mom this Christmas, this homemade vanilla extract would be perfect!  (You’d better get started today though.  It needs at least six weeks to be ready.)

I’ve also made these Teacup Lights in the past and they turn out so pretty and unique!  Pick up some tea cups at an antique shop and you’ll have a gift like none other!

DIY Gifts for Dads:

I had my husband help with this section since he’s a dad and I’m not.  We scoured Pinterest looking through handmade items and came up with a big fat NO.  Then, I took a different approach.  Here are five things you could make for the dad in your life that are sure to make him smile!  I’m not going to write about each of them because all I can say is Yum, Yum, YUM!  Be sure to check them all out!  (And send me a sample of any that you make!)

Almond Joys

Oreos

Salted Caramel Truffles

Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups

Snickers Fudge

Butterfingers

Tootsie Rolls

DIY Gifts for Grandma and Grandpa:

Maybe I’m a sucker for the artsy-fartsy stuff, but I just think these embroidered pictures (this link is no longer available, but I’m leaving this one up since I think you can probably look at the photo and get the idea) are too adorable!!  The tutorial is really neat too…I can’t wait to try it out!

Make this welcome sign for the grandparents in your life and it will be sure to bring a smile to their face.

Grandparents are sure to love this DIY picture frame vase!

This footprint butterfly flower pot has the “aaaaaw factor” built right into it.  It’d be darling filled with flowers or a nice indoor plant.

I made a couple of these count your blessings plaques (Instructions found here) for Christmas a couple years ago and the grandparents loved them!  The photos can be updated with recent pictures of the grand kids each year as part of the gift.  (I know mom…you’re still missing a piece of yours and the photos haven’t been updated…)

I’m making a jetpack for my toddler from 2 liter bottles & felt; and a felt campfire and s’mores kit for my 1st grader.

Nice ideas. However I got my mom and dad something already. What I really needed were ideas for *older* siblings. For a moment I thought I had found something.

I would think several of those mom/dad gifts would also work well for older siblings! 😉
