A couple days ago, we made a scarecrow out of a paper bag. Today, I decided to use a different method and add straw since actual scarecrows are stuffed with straw. So, we did this fun coffee filter art project! The girls enjoyed it and they’re kind of fun. The original idea for this project was a scarecrow made out of a paper plate, but we’re all out of paper plates, so I decided to use a coffee filter instead. They held up surprisingly well to M’s aggressive coloring! Unfortunately, they didn’t hold up so well to the glue. So…if you’re going to make a coffee filter…anything…stay away from the glue. It soaks right through and your project will end up glued to the table (or in our case, the newspaper that was under it).
Coffee Filter Art: Make a Scarecrow
Preparation time: 5 minutes

Supplies:
- Coffee filter
- Sharpie markers (because they don’t run!)
- Black construction paper
- Scissors
- Straw (or raffia) cut into small pieces
- Corn
- Glue
Preparation instructions:
- Cut out a hat shape from the black construction paper.
Step by step instructions:
- Give your child the coffee filter and markers. Let them color to their heart’s content! H drew a face and M just colored it in.
- Give your child the glue and the corn. Let them glue on the corn as the eyes, nose, and mouth.
- Give your child the straw. Let them glue the straw in place.
- Give your child the hat to glue on top.
Again, I advise doing this with a paper plate instead of the coffee filter like I did. Same prep, same cost, same everything, except the finished project will last a little longer. Want to know a secret though? I don’t mind having an art project that’s not sticking around! (Shhhh…don’t tell!)
