Pine Cone Crafts Day 2: Pine Cone Penguins

Pine cones are so great for crafting.  You can make a huge variety of things out of them and best of all, they’re FREE!  I think today’s craft is probably my favorite of all the pine cone crafts we’ll be doing this week.  These pine cone penguins are just about the cutest thing ever!  The down side of this craft is that it’s pretty heavy on adult involvement.  You can do the gluing with craft glue, but a hot glue gun works much better and obviously, you shouldn’t let your kids use a hot glue gun.

Preparation instructions:

  • Gather nature items!  This is probably the part where you can allow your kids to help the most.  Find a bunch of pine cones and let your child pick their favorite.

Step by step instructions:

  • Paint a white belly on the small pinecone.
  • Paint half of the acorn lid to make a face.
  • From your big pine cone, cut the top twig off for the penguin’s neck.  Also cut off two big scales.
  • Glue the neck to the top of the penguin’s body using hot glue.  Then, glue the face onto the neck.  Finally, glue the big scales on the sides for wings.
  • Paint two tiny black eyes on the face.
  • Glue the penguin to the twig so the twig balances the penguin so it’ll stand up.

You’re welcome! Yeah, we don’t actually have pine cones in our yard, but I asked around and found plenty of people willing to give them up!
