What did you use?
Since we only had two weeks to review SchoolhouseTeachers.com, I decided to limit what I used to just one thing. I browsed through LOTS more and will share about some of that next, but I want to share specifically about what we used first.
Daily Spelling
Since I’ve been working with H on reading, I decided to check out the spelling for PreK/K. I figured it’d be mostly review for her, but since we’ve taken a bit of a break, I thought it would be good. It was great!! The amount of time in each daily lesson was long enough to get the concept, but short enough to keep H’s attention. She looked forward to spelling time each day and really enjoyed doing the lessons with me.
The lessons were simple. Each lesson had four words to learn. The first lesson’s words were at, cat, hat, and rat. As you can see, these lessons are based on word families. The first day, you just introduce the words. Then, on the next three days, you have a special word that the child writes and draws a picture of. Then they copy the words onto a piece of paper while saying the letters and then saying the words. By the end of day three, H was able to quickly read all the words. She was also able to spell the words. Her daddy decided to test her a little. He asked her (after she read the words to him), “What does s-a-t spell?” I was starting to write it on the paper when she said, “Sat!” We started asking her other words and she was able to figure them out in her head. Learning word families has definitely clicked with her after these two weeks! I’m excited to see how much more she learns as we continue to use SchoolhouseTeacher.com’s Daily Spelling program.
What else did you explore?
Ditch the Desk K-5
These unit studies help you ditch your desks and teach your children through unit studies. There are unit studies on everything from Candy Canes to Cold and Insulation, from Gifts and Winter to Growing up Dutch, from Saint Nicholas to Spring. You get the idea! I love a good unit study as well as the next person, but they are a TON of work to put together. At SchoolhouseTeachers.com, the work is done for you! These are high quality lessons that will make you feel like an expert teacher and help your child really enjoy learning.
Planners
I was so impressed as I looked through the planners available at SchoolhouseTeachers.com. The quality is superior to anything I’ve seen online anywhere else. There are five different planners available with your membership.
- Schoolhouse Planner: This is the mother of all planners. It comes with almost 800 pages of unique forms that you can pick from to print a planner that is perfect for YOU!
- Special Learners Schoolhouse Planner
- Primary Schoolhouse Planner
- Intermediate Schoolhouse Planner
- High School Schoolhouse Planner
The last four planners all include information, forms, and checklists relevant for parents of those students. I found them very comprehensive and loaded with great information.
Fitness
I am so, so excited about this fitness course. I’m the one who NEEDS a fitness class and this is something I’m going to do for me! The fitness course at SchoolhouseTeachers.com was created by Bethany Learn, founder of Fit2Be Studio which I’ve had great experience with in the past. I’m looking forward to getting back into shape with my family soon!
What was your opinion of SchoolhouseTeachers.com?
When I first logged on to SchoolhouseTeachers.com, I’ll admit, I was a bit overwhelmed. There was just SO much! I actually spent a couple days just browsing to see what I wanted to do with my girls. The more I browsed, the more impressed I was. The teachers are experts in their field and many have been teaching for many years. The site is well organized and easy to understand. There is a gold mine of information, resources, classes, and knowledge at your fingertips when you’re on SchoolhouseTeachers.com. I’m just thrilled that I’m going to have access to it for the next year.
Would you recommend SchoolhouseTeachers.com?
Absolutely! I think it’s an excellent resource for anyone who homeschools whether you are just starting out with a kindergartner or you have kids in High School.
How much is it?
A SchoolhouseTeachers.com yearly membership is normally $12.95/month or $139/year, but now through Christmas, you can save 40% off a monthly membership or 50% off a yearly membership! You can get all these amazing resources for just $64.26/year!
