At our house, we love books! I have three children, ages 1, 3, and 5 and all three of them love to read pretty much anything. We recently received a new book to review from WordsBright called S is for Smiling Sunrise. This sweet book was no exception. All three of my children loved it!
S is for Smiling Sunrise is a new take on the typical ABC book. Subtitled, “An Alphabet Book of Goodness, Beauty, and Wonder, S is for Smiling Sunrise is just that!
This book is geared toward toddler through early elementary aged children. The pages are brightly colored, have a clear, clean layout, and contain both upper and lowercase letters and beautifully sweet pictures. Each letter has not only a picture and word that goes along with it, it also has a little rhyme. For example, the word for I is “Infant”. The sweet picture is accompanied by this rhyme. “I is for Infant, Sleeping peacefully, Potential for greatness, Resting gracefully!” To me, this sort of book is far more valuable than the typical ABC book. Not only is the child learning the sounds that accompany letters, they are also learning concepts and a broad vocabulary.
For this review, we received a CD that has a song putting the words of the book to music. (The CD was provided for the review, but the song is available as a digital download on the website.) It’s actually the tune of the traditional ABC song and is easy to learn so you can sing along with your child as you read the book. It’s a fun song that your children will quickly learn to sing along to.

As I mentioned before, I have three children and all of them enjoyed this book. What I think is neat is that it suits all three of them. My one year old loves the bright pictures and the singing. As he grows, he’ll learn to find the letters that we’re talking about. My 3 year old is still learning letter recognition. She’s looking for each letter on the page and identifying them. My five year old is able to learn upper and lowercase letters by reading this book as well as new vocabulary and the patterns that accompany rhyming.
Also available for download are two digital teaching guides. There is a Pre-K guide that gives general information on how to use the book with your child. The K-3 guide goes much more in depth with activities, questions, vocabulary, and other concepts. It also includes ideas for art projects and field trips. this book, along with the teacher guides would be a great supplement to any curriculum.
