Today, we pick up with another activity for your older children to do while you are busy nursing your babies.
Magnetic Letters Nursing Activity
Magnetic Letters is a SUPER simple nursing drawer activity that can be modified to fit any aged child. I keep our letters in a wet wipes case in the basket on top of the nursing drawers and pull them out when the girls get bored. Here are some ideas for things to do with the magnetic letters.
Ideas for Using Magnetic Letters
- Have your child put the letters in alphabetical order.
- Have your child sort the letters into groups of “like” letters (if you have more than one set like we do).
- Have your child make words on your own using the letters.
- Make a paper that has certain words you want your child to make. Have your child find the letters and make the words.
- Let your child have free play time with the letters to stack, line up, or just play with them.
In these pictures M, who is two and a half, was just playing with the letters. She lined them all up and was “sounding out” words. This is a fantastic early literacy skill. She’s recognizing that those letters have sounds, form words, and that you can read the words made by the letters. She also found some matching letters. This is also great! Don’t think that just because your child doesn’t know their letters or isn’t sounding things out yet that they’re too young to be learning by playing with letters. I love how this activity can build literacy no matter your child’s age!
Now you’re probably wondering the significance of these being magnetic letters. There is none. Ha! I really just like them because they’re big and easy for small hands to handle. You might be able to find other letters like this that aren’t magnetic, but I haven’t seen any.
What’s your favorite tool for early literacy?

With them being magnetic you can also use them with a cookie sheet (good in the car) or as a way to sore them. Adds another demention of motor skill play. And some sets are diff colored letters (blue, yellow, red) so there is also color grouping for younger ones!
Great idea. Keep them coming. Due in Jan and will have a 3yr old!
Absolutely!
Stick around, I have at least 9 more nursing drawer activities to share in the coming weeks. ๐
I love this. We only have one kiddo right now, but this seriously could come in handy ๐
Neat idea to do “nursing” drawers! Wish I had thought of something like that a LONG time ago. ๐
