I remember learning about Christopher Columbus when I was a kid. His story was such an important one to the beginning of our nation. It is a story of overcoming obstacles and perseverance. I remember doing all the Columbus Day Activities and learning the saying, “In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue!” Columbus was almost idolized back in those days as being the greatest explorer who ever walked the earth.
(If you don’t know the story of Christopher Columbus, there is a short video below that sums it up well.)
Well, things have changed a lot since I was a kid and although Columbus is no longer idolized in many circles, he was still a key player in our country’s beginnings and our children still need to learn about him in school. That said, Columbus Day is coming up, so it’s the perfect time to plan activities to do with your preschoolers! Below, I’ve included some fun activities I’ve found around the internet. There are crafts, units, stories, and even songs about Columbus Day!
Columbus Day Sailing Ship Craft:
I thought this was really cute! Little fingers love ripping paper and also gluing and coloring with markers. Can’t go wrong with this craft!

Columbus Day Boat Races
This activity looks like so much fun! Make a boat using the tutorial found on the blog, then race them across the tub by blowing on their sales!

Float or Sink and Other Columbus Day Activities
I’ve had fun with float or sink activities before. This would be a fun water activity to do on Columbus Day.

Be sure to check out the entire Hooray for Columbus Day unit!

Vintage Christopher Columbus Video: This is definitely an old video, but it would be a good, basic way to tell the story to your little ones.

Looks like lots of fun things to do!!
