I needed a simple craft today. Something that wouldn’t take forever since we were running late anyway and it was almost bedtime. So, I decided to give this coffee filter art project for kids a shot. (Warning: Real Mom Moment ahead!) The problem? I couldn’t find our markers. I know, I know. They’re on the list of essentials for your child’s craft kit. But I could only find two big ones and a pack of almost-dried-out skinny ones. I tried my sharpies, but they didn’t work. So…we went with it. As a result, this project was way less cool than it could have been, but turned out okay anyway.
Easy Art Project for Kids: Coffee Filter Designs
Preparation time: 5 minutes
Project time: ~15 minutes
Project cost: $ Low
Parental involvement: Low
Inspiration: Easy Craft Tye Dye Coffee Filters from Mommy with Selective Memory (and some of my own memories from preschool!)
Supplies:
- Coffee Filters
- Fat, regular markers (The crayola ones work great! And by fat, I mean regular, not skinny.)
- Spray bottle filled with water
Preparation instructions:
- Fold coffee filters in 8ths (in half three times)
Step by step instructions:
- Give your child the folded coffee filter and let them color it. The more color, the better.
- Lightly spray the folded, colored coffee filter. (I only did two light mists and that was enough. The water should soak through within 30 seconds.)
- Let dry.
- Unfold and see your masterpiece!
This is a great project for learning about color mixing. Give your child a red and a blue and see what color they get. Then do another with yellow and red. Then try one with purple and yellow. What’d they get with that one? 😉

Perfect craft for this cold, rainy day! We did the coloring, then let them dry while we cleaned house. Then we made parachutes out of them for a gravity experiment! Art and science in one= perfect for me!

Yep! They look pretty there when the sun shines through them. 🙂
We’ve done this craft to make butterflies – the girls love it. 🙂 And I have a pack of coffee filters that are too small for my coffee maker, so it’s a perfect way to use them up. Maybe we’ll do these again tomorrow! Thanks for the reminder. 🙂
