Recently, I’ve become aware of people using supplies from Dollar Tree to create beautiful decor for their home. I had to check it out for myself. I headed to the nearest Dollar Tree and started browsing the aisles–I was not disappointed! There are SO many things there that can be used for craft supplies and projects! Today, I’m sharing the first DIY Dollar Tree Craft project of what I hope to be many to come! The Dollar Tree Valentine Heart Makeover!

DIY Dollar Tree Craft: Valentine Heart Makeover

This is the original heart, found at Dollar Tree. It’s cute, but is something you would probably only use at Valentine’s Day. Today, I’m showing how you can create something you can use for longer than just a month.

First, pick out your scrapbook paper. I like browsing the scrapbook paper aisle, but buying a book makes it easy to find coordinating papers. That’s what I did for this project. Play around with different prints until you find a combination you really like!

TIP: When combining paper prints (or fabrics, depending on the project), put small or muted prints in between the larger, more bold prints. It breaks it up and creates a nice look.

Next, flip over the heart. It is super easy to disassemble. Just pick some of the tape off, get a hold of the red ribbon, and pull it off the other pieces. No problem! There might be some bits of the brown tape sticking out. Be sure to pull those off as well.

Love making signs? Here’s another for you to try!

Now, lay out your scrapbook paper and use the heart pieces as a stencil. Cut out each paper so it fits perfectly over the wood piece. This may take some extra trimming. Remember, it’s easier to take more off than put more back on! So don’t over-cut. If you have a rotary cutting tool, it would probably work great for this project. Mine is used exclusively on fabric, so I just used scissors.

Dollar Tree Heart Makeover - Cut out paper to over each piece.

When all your pieces are cut, lay them out on top of the heart to make sure you like the way they look. Now’s the time to change your mind if you don’t like them. Don’t wait until after you’ve glued the paper on. Lol!

The finish on the original heart is a little slick, so before gluing, put on a coat of Mod Podge with your sponge brush and let it dry. When it’s completely dry, add another coat of Mod Podge and stick down your scrapbook paper. Don’t overdo it with the Mod Podge. Many thin coats are better than one thick one.

Dollar Tree Valentine Heart Makeover - Cover each piece with mod-podge.

Many projects will have you add more Mod Podge over whatever you’re mod podging (I know that’s not a word, but I like it. Lol!), but for this project, I really liked the look of it just glued on, so I didn’t do that.

Dollar Tree Heart Makeover - Glue the pieces in place.

While you’re waiting for your heart pieces to dry, you can work on making the bow. For this bow, I just looped the ribbon back and forth four times and then added hot glue in between each layer.

Add some flowers to your bow and you’re all set! These flowers also came from Dollar Tree. It was a stem with lots of small white flowers. I grouped three of them together to create this look.

Once the Mod Podge is dry, flip over your pieces, line them up carefully, and glue ribbon to the back to hold them together and also to create a hanger.

When the hot glue is dry, flip the heart back over and glue on the bow. Hang on your wall and enjoy!

And that’s it! Your Valentine Heart Makeover is complete! This Dollar Tree craft took under two hours to make and much of that was time spent waiting for glue to dry.

I have SO many other ideas for what to do with this heart that I went back to Dollar Tree and picked up a couple more before they sell out. My advice, go grab them now! If you miss them, you’ll surely regret it later!
