Every year on my children’s birthdays, when people ask what they want, my answer is, “something crafty”. They love to make stuff and most of all, love having open ended craft supplies. For this reason, they always have access to their kids’ craft kit. They have a table in the basement where they can go and just create. Their craft kit gives them easy access to craft supplies that aren’t terribly messy, but still gives plenty of creative leeway. The more messy items (paint and glitter) only come out occasionally.
To me, putting together this kids’ craft kit came naturally. Many of the things, I already had in my craft supplies. A friend recently pointed out to me that she doesn’t know how to help her kids be crafty because she herself isn’t crafty. That gave me the idea to put together this list so virtually anyone can put together a craft kit for their kids quickly and easily without even having to think about what to include. My kids helped me put together this list so we wouldn’t miss a thing.
Get Ready: Contain Your Kids’ Craft Kit
You need something to contain your craft kit. Here are some great options!
- Craft Box – I like this one. It’s not huge, but has enough sections to hold a few essentials so your child can grab and go!
- Shoe Door Hanger – This is what we use at our house. It hangs in the basement next to their craft table and they have easy access and easy cleanup.
- Rolling Cart – I have several of these in my home and they are great for organizing craft supplies!
- Craft Table – If you want to really go all out, you can get a table with all the organization right there! I love both these options. The first because it’s budget friendly, the second because it’s got some great organization options built in!
Get Set! Build Your Kids’ Craft Kit
Now it’s time to gather supplies! Like I said, I had many of these items in my own craft supplies, so gathering them up was pretty easy, but in case you need to pick up a few, I’ve included links to those items on Amazon (affiliate links mean I earn a tiny bit if you make a purchase using my links). Go! Set Your Kids Loose!
Pinterest is great for a lot of things. Crafts for adults, recipes, party planning…but it’s not great for guiding your kids in their crafting. You want your kids to be creative and use their imagination. If your child seems stumped with how to get started, get down on their level and start making things with them. Color some popsicle sticks and glue them together to make a picture frame. String beads on a pipe cleaner to make bracelets or a necklace. Make (and decorate) paper airplanes. Just make sure the crafting isn’t too directed. Leave things open ended and your child will start crafting on their own soon!
