Fall Crafts for Kids: Bubble Wrap Indian Corn

Continuing with Thanksgiving crafts, today we made Indian Corn using bubble wrap as our paint “brushes”.  When I first saw this idea, I knew we had to try it because of how cute it was!  Thankfully, I won a giveaway and received my prize (essential oils wrapped in bubble wrap) just a few days ago so I was all set!  In fact, the back side of the bubble wrap was sticky, so I was able to make nice little stamps out of it.  Waaaaaay cool!  But don’t worry, if you don’t have sticky bubble wrap, you can still do this craft…you just may get a little more messy in the process!

Make Your Own Decorative Indian Corn

Preparation time: 2 minutes

Supplies:

• Card stock
• Paint (You’ll want a runny paint for this.  I used acrylics in fall colors, I used two browns, yellow, purple, and red)
• Paint pallet (I used junk mail!)
• Toothpick
• Bubble Wrap
• Pencil
• Scissors
• Hole Punch
• Raffia

Preparation instructions:

• On the card stock, draw two corn shapes.  These are just rough guidelines to show your child where to paint.
• Fold the bubble wrap so that there is a “handle”.  Use tape to keep the handle section up so your child doesn’t end up with hands that are completely covered in paint.
• Pour the paint onto your pallet.

Step by step instructions:

• Give your child the toothpick and let them run it around through the paint giving it a marbled effect.  I had to demonstrate this first, but the girls figured it out easily after seeing what I was talking about.

• Give your child the bubble wrap paint “brush” and have them dip it in the paint, then dab it on the paper.  Less is more here.  My girls didn’t want to stop, so you kind of lost the “kernel look”.  You want some white showing.  Have your child do this repeatedly until the entire corn cob drawing is covered.  This is a time when you WANT to paint outside the lines!

 

• Let dry.
• Cut out corn cobs.  If your child gets carried away with the paint like mine did, you’ll have to guess where the lines are, but “close enough” is just fine!
• Punch a hole in the top of each corn cob.
• Tie the two cobs together with raffia and make a pretty bow!
