As a homeschooling family, we have the unique privilege of being with our kids on every single one of their “school days”. We get to see the lightbulb turn on when they learn something new, struggle alongside them as they work through difficult subjects, and we have the ability to tailor their education so it fits their learning style. I think my personal favorite thing about homeschooling though is being the one to plan, execute, and chaperone field trips! Field trips when homeschooling can mean something as small as going to the farmer’s market all the way up to a trip to Europe. Today, I’d like to share my top 10 homeschool travel bucket list. When I first started this post, I just titled it “My Homeschool Travel Bucket List”, but it kept getting longer and longer. I had to cut it down to make it a bit more reasonable. So here are the top 10 places I would like to take my kids.

Homeschool Travel Bucket List

Yosemite National Park

Some things cannot be understood by looking at pictures. The massive size of the sequoias, the grandeur of the mountains, and the vastness of the ocean are some of these things. Taking a trip to Yosemite is definitely on the list so that we and our children can experience this grandeur in person.

Grand Canyon National Park

Speaking of places where the photos don’t do justice, the Grand Canyon is another such place. If you want to really feel small, visit the Grand Canyon. It’s a place that changed me when I visited and I can’t wait to take my children there someday.

Niagara Falls

Yet another place where you can experience the power of God’s creation. As 3,160 TONS of water flow over Niagara Falls every second, you get a sense of the power behind who God is. Taking your children there should definitely be a priority. It’s not something you can understand by looking at pictures, it’s so much bigger in real life.

Williamsburg, VA

Walking through Colonial Williamsburg is like taking a step back through time and landing in 1776. With over 40 sites where you can see people doing anything from making candles to shoeing horses, Williamsburg is the perfect place to visit when studying American history. While Williamsburg would be worth a trip out east all on its own, it’s also important to note that Williamsburg is just a short drive from many other historic sites and only 2.5 hours from Washington D.C. If taking a homeschool trip, it would definitely be worth visiting those other sites!

Washington D.C.

So much history in the eastern part of the country! You can hardly write a post about homeschool trips without including it. Not only do you have the capitol, there are also many memorials, historic sites, the Smithsonian, the Holocaust museum, the White House, and so much more.

Homeschool Travel Bucket List: Elementary Years

Rocky Mountain National Park

This national park is conveniently located just 9 hours from our home. It is one of the most beautiful national parks in the country (my opinion–they didn’t pay me to say that) and visiting is an incredible experience! We’ve been there once already and will definitely be back. Rocky Mountain National Park is a great place for nature study and hands on science lessons. There are often park rangers throughout the park who are ready and willing to teach about the park, the ecosystem, and the animals living there.

South Dakota Badlands, Mt. Rushmore, and More

This was a vacation my family went on when I was a child and I can’t wait to take my kids there someday. The badlands of South Dakota are like nothing else in the country and Mt. Rushmore is an incredible site. While visiting that part of the country, you can’t miss Custer State Park and the massive herds of buffalo as well as the beautiful black hills. It’s a beautiful part of the country. Definitely on our homeschool travel bucket list!

Homeschool Travel Bucket List

Alaska

With breathtaking mountains, unmatched numbers of wildlife, beautiful fjords, the northern lights, and so much more, traveling to Alaska will feel almost like traveling to a different planet. Going to Alaska during the summer months has been on my personal bucket list for years and taking the kids would be an amazing adventure.

Homeschool Travel Bucket List

Florida Beaches

One of the great things about homeschool travel is that you can visit “spring break” or “summer” destinations on the off season. I would never want to visit a Florida beach during spring or summer break, but taking the family during the off season provides a perfect opportunity for rest, relaxation, and learning as a family! The vastness of the ocean can teach so much about how small we are and how big God is and I can’t wait for my kids to visit the ocean for the first time.

Homeschool Travel Bucket List

Zion National Park

Towering red rock, steep canyons, sparkling pools, and rushing waterfalls can all be found in Zion National Park. Zion is a park that my husband and I have never visited, but have seen so many beautiful photos, it’s made our bucket list for our family. The hikes look amazing and we would love to visit one day.

Homeschool Travel Bucket List

Making this homeschool travel bucket list should have been a simple task, but truthfully, there are so many places that would be amazing to take our family, it was hard picking just 10! I’m sure that as we do go to some of these places in the coming years, we will make many stops along the way to visit other places.

How about you? What is on your travel bucket list?

Great list of places to see! The wanderlust is stirring now. As a long time homeschooler, I think sometimes we need the reminder to step outside our own area and see the world ! Best education ever !
