Musical Crafts for Kids: Make Your Own Kazoo!

Yesterday, we made our own maracas.  To add to the musical fun, today, I’m going to show you how to make your own kazoo!  These kazoos are easy to make, cheap, and when you’re done, you won’t feel bad just throwing them in the trash (since they’re made of mostly trash anyway)!

Supplies:

• Toilet paper tube
• Wax paper
• Rubber band
• Crayons or markers
• Stickers

Preparation instructions:

• None!

Step by step instructions:

• Give your child a toilet paper tube to decorate.  They can decorate with crayons, markers, or stickers.
• Tear a piece of wax paper into a 5″x5″ square.
• Place wax paper over the top of the tube and fasten tightly with rubber band.
• Sing or talk into the kazoo and enjoy!

Troubleshooting:

Not gonna lie…I almost labeled this project a pinterest FAIL.  I had the graphics made and everything!  But I kept seeing blogs where people had more success with it than I was, so I decided to keep trying before posting it.  I found and watched this video.

Then I figured it out!  My rubber bands were too close to the end of the kazoo.  See in my pictures how they’re so close to the end?  That’s because I didn’t want to hide the decorations.  But it turns out, you have to have a little space between the end of the kazoo and the rubber band in order to get enough vibration.  So there you go.  Don’t give up!  They’re so fun, you’ll want to get it to work!
