Kids love music. There’s just really no way around it. A great way to encourage learning through music is to give your child access to musical instruments. Unfortunately, even toy instruments can be expensive. So why not make your own? Today, I’m going to show you how you can make your own maracas! Over the next few days, we’ll be making other musical instruments so that your child can have a few different instruments they can play.
How to Make Your Own Maracas
Preparation time: 5 minutes
Project time: ~15 minutes
Project cost: $ Low
Parental involvement: Medium
Inspiration: Maracas Made From Plastic Easter Eggs from Apartment Therapy
Supplies (for making 2 maracas):
- 2 Easter Eggs
- 4 Spoons
- Filling: beans, popcorn, rice…use different things to get different sounds
- Masking tape or pretty, fun tape (Duct tape makes lots of varieties!)
- Markers
Preparation instructions:
- Hold the spoons facing each other and tape the handles together. I taped all the way up because the spoons were flexible enough that I could then just pop the eggs in. If you have stiffer (nicer!) spoons, you may just want to tape at the bottom.
Step by step instructions:
- Help your child put a little bit of filling in their egg. They only need about a tablespoon. With my girls, this was messy. We had at least two spills. That was okay except baby D was climbing all over trying to eat small choking hazards. Next time, I’d do this during his nap time!
- Close the eggs and squeeze them in between the two spoons.
- Put a piece of tape around the egg and spoons. (Trust me, this step is necessary. Don’t ask me how I know!)
- Use the markers to decorate the tape. We skipped this step because the girls were having such a great time singing and playing with their new maracas! It’ll probably happen down the road sometime, but not today. 🙂
Have you ever made a musical instrument with your child? The girls had so much fun with these and can’t wait to make the next instrument!
If you decide to do this project, be sure to come back and tell me about it! Take pictures and share them on my Facebook sharing post! I’d love to see what you and your little ones are making together!
