I’ve never been one to buy a lot of gadgets for babies, so when Isaac got the VTech Baby Lil’ Critters Soothing Starlight Hippo for his first birthday, I was skeptical to say the least. Today, I want to share my full review of the VTech Baby Lil’ Critters Soothing Starlight Hippo.

VTech Baby Lil’ Critters Soothing Starlight Hippo Review
When Isaac received this hippo as a gift, we thought it was cute and all, but to be honest, we didn’t even turn it on at all until just recently. See, I normally sing him to sleep and then lay him down in bed, so we really didn’t have much use for it. However, a few weeks ago, I started to lose my voice, so we decided to give it a try. Isaac LOVED it! He rested peacefully in my arms, just watching the stars and listening to the music until he fell asleep. It has three time settings (15min, 30min, and 45min) and I normally put it on 45. Last night, it somehow got switched over to 15 and it turned off before he was asleep. He pointed at it and made his, “I want it” sound. I turned it back on and he relaxed again.
My Favorite Feature of the Lil’ Critters Soothing Starlight Hippo
The really cool thing about this critter though is that it has a sound sensor. So if your baby cries in the night, it’ll come on and stay on for a while. Isaac used to sleep through the night, but lately, has been teething hard. His nights had gotten really rough with waking up three or more times each night. I turned on the hippo’s sound sensor and since then, he’ll give a little cry for a second (not even fully waking up), then lay there listening to the music until he falls asleep. It’s *WONDERFUL*!!

The One Downside
The only downside of the Vtech Baby Lil’ Critters Soothing Starlight Hippo is that it runs on batteries and if Isaac has a few bad nights in a row, the batteries will be dead. And when the batteries start dying, things get weird. The hippo will sometimes play the same three notes of a song over and over until it’s either turned off or the batteries are completely gone. I’m planning to put in rechargeable batteries the next chance I get.
Overall, this little hippo is a big hit at our house! It’s perfect for babies still in cribs and even my 5 year old who shares a room with my 1 year old enjoys the pretty display of stars on the ceiling.
